This “Do” and Thou Shalt Live!

By Duane V. Maxey

“Whatsoever God hath said unto thee, DO” (Genesis 31:16).

“Whatsoever He [Christ Jesus] saith unto you, DO IT” (John 2:5).

“THIS DO, and thou shalt live” (Luke 10:28).

The Bible makes it exceedingly clear that hearing and believing God’s Word is NOT ENOUGH!  God’s Word is LITERALLY LOADED with commands that we be DOERS thereof.  Consider the following Scriptures which bear this out:

Leviticus 26:15-16 — “If your soul abhor my judgments, so that YE WILL NOT DO all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant: I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror . . “

Deuteronomy 4:1 — “Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for TO DO THEM, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers giveth you.”

Deuteronomy 6:2-3, 24-25 — “. . Keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee .. and observe TO DO IT; that it may be well with thee . . the Lord commanded us TO DO ALL THESE STATUTES . . that He might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.  It shall be our righteousness, if we observe TO DO ALL THESE COMMANDMENTS before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded us.”

Deuteronomy 8:1 — “All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe TO DO, that ye may live . .”

Deuteronomy 12:32 — “What thing soever I command you, observe TO DO it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.”

Joshua 23:6 — “Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and TO DO all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left.”

Judges 2:17 — “They turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the Lord; but THEY DID NOT SO.”

2 Chronicles 14:4 — “And [king Asa] commanded Judah to seek the Lord God of their fathers, and TO DO the law and the commandment.”

Isaiah 1:17 — “Learn TO DO well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.”

Ezekiel 18:19 — “When the son HATH DONE that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and HATH DONE them, he shall surely live.”

Ezekiel 33:31-32 — “They hear thy words, but they WILL NOT DO THEM: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.  Thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for THEY HEAR THY WORDS, BUT THEY DO THEM NOT.”

Ezra 7:26 — “Whosoever WILL NOT DO the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.”

Micah 6:8 — “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but TO DO justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”

John 4:34 — “Jesus saith unto them, My meat is TO DO the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.”

John 13:15 — “For I have given you an example, that ye should DO AS I HAVE DONE to you.”

John 15:14 — “Ye are my friends, IF YE DO whatsoever I command you.

Romans 2:13 — “For NOT THE HEARERS OF THE LAW are just before God, but THE DOERS OF THE LAW shall be justified.”

James 1:22 — “But BE YE DOERS of the word, and NOT HEARERS ONLY, deceiving your own selves.”

James 4:17 — “Therefore to him that knoweth TO DO GOOD, and DOETH IT NOT, to him it is sin.”

We are living in a time when many professed Christians like the idea expressed thus: — In the Old Testament, God said “DO,” but in the New Testament God says, “DONE” — as if all God expects of Christians now is that they hear and believe that Christ as “DONE” everything necessary to get them to Heaven — with no need for Christians TO DO ANYTHING, but keep on believing!  This is a grievous error, and believing it will no doubt bring damnation to countless thousands of “Easy Believism”, professed Christians!

Conversely, when one both HEARS and obediently DOES what God commands, God is therewith pleased, and brings joy into the heart of the DOER: — John 13:17 — “If ye know these things, HAPPY ARE YE if ye DO THEM.”  Part of the “happiness” of those who both believe and DO Christ’s commandments comes in this life, but the MUCH GREATER PART OF THEIR HAPPINESS shall come when they hear Christ invite them after the Judgment, “COME, YE BLESSED OF MY FATHER, INHERIT THE KINGDOM PREPARED FOR YOU FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD” (Matthew 25:34)!

Hallelujah!  I plan to be in that number!  How about you?
